Ferries and Cruises

One of the reasons why Stockholm is a unique destination for international cruises is because many of the harbors are located close to downtown Stockholm. Which in turn means, more often than not you’re within walking distance to most of the city’s attractions. The biggest cruise ships do not, however, pass through the Stockholm archipelago but dock at Nynäshamn, which has bus departures to the city.

A popular activity is to take the so-called “Finland Ferry” from Stockholm to shop, dine out and party or just take in the scenery of the archipelago and the sea air at a low price. Nowadays, ferries also leave for the Baltics and Poland – but the moniker Finland Ferry persists. The ferries depart from Stadsgården on Södermalm or Frihamnen on Gärdet.

Stadsgårdskajen: Ferries from Åland and Finland arrive here daily, near Slussen in central Stockholm. If you wish to extend your weekend in Stockholm with a visit to Riga or Tallinn, why not try out Birka Cruises or Viking Line from here? You can walk or take the bus from Stadsgårdskajen to Slussen subway station.

Frihamnen: Tallink Silja ferries from Helsinki, Åbo, Tallinn and Riga arrive daily in Frihamnen, centrally located in northeast Stockholm. Gärdet is the closest subway station to Frihamnen, other options are bus nr. 1, 72 or 76 for travel into central Stockholm.
